When the new remains unsuccessful
Several considerations concerning the failure of product innovations

A history of innovation failure, more specifically an analysis of its causes, can lead not only to a deeper understanding of the failure itself but also to a broader and more realistic assessment of technological change in general. Taking three case studies of failed product innovations, the author illustrates exactly this point by compiling the typical reasons for innovation failure and thereby providing an insight into the anatomy of failure.

From Crisis Article to the House Wife's Dream: the History of GF Cooking Utensils, 1933–1968
Out of the Corporate Archives of Georg Fischer Ltd.

The enameled cast iron pans that GF produced between 1933 and 1968 are still very popular among devotees of good cuisine. How did an industrial company that was famous for its fittings, truck wheels, castings and machine tools get involved in producing something so completely different as pots and pans? This is the colorful story of GF cooking utensils, based on the memoirs of GF’s former traveling salesman for commercial cast iron products, along with the economic and political background that was ultimately responsible for the launch and success of this product range.

Ta dam ta dam - the international history of the track system in Switzerland

Over the past 150 years, the railways’ investment and maintenance costs for their track systems have declined in relation to overall costs. Unlike with rolling stock, however, no national industry developed despite the high investment levels. Notwithstanding its role as a national railway company, the Swiss Federal Railways did not have to engage in any covert employment policy or economic development. The company was able to go abroad to purchase products offering the best value for money. Because Switzerland purchased almost everything abroad, the Swiss Federal Railways became a testing ground for new developments.

Product Innovations and Material Culture from the Late-Middle Ages up to Industrialisation

Research into the history of technology has concerned itself first and foremost with system and process innovation, concentrating on modern technology since industrialization. Little attention has been paid to the products themselves. In recent years, historical consumer research has trained its sights on products and product innovations – the "world of goods". It has extended its focus to modern times and argued that the assumption that preindustrial societies were self-sufficient has prevented us from looking more closely at consumption. In light of this perspective, our attention is to be directed to the "things" that have shaped and altered material culture. This also warrants closer study of the technological change underlying the products. Eyeglasses, watches or table cutlery, for instance, have undergone multiple modifications since they were first introduced and have been marketed in significant variants and price ranges. The "world of goods" also includes products that came to Europe through the Columbian Exchange or as goods from the colonies – including metal goods, ceramics, porcelain or textiles such as printed cottons – and, not least, "populuxe" goods, i.e. mass-produced items such as buttons, buckles and tins.

Premodern water "know-how" in the Iron Library (II)
The understanding of Water Quality of Leonhard Thurneysser and Torbern Bergman

Part two in the series on water knowledge collected at the Iron Library is devoted to chemical literature. Following a brief summary of the basic statements and findings in the first part, the paper focuses on the testing of water by the alchemist Leonhard Thurneysser. His methods are viewed through the eyes of Jacob Leupold, who is known to us from the first part and who quoted Thurneysser’s work extensively. The paper then deals with the method of water analysis proposed by the Swedish chemist Torbern Bergman. He presented a systematic guide to examining water that was based first and foremost on qualitative analysis by means of reagents and quantitative analysis by means of evaporation.

Material Innovation in a Social Context
Historical Product Line Analysis using the example of the Industrially Produced Shoe

The aim of this paper is to show the advantages of applying product line analysis (a method developed from ecological economic research) to research on the history of technology. The author’s starting point is innovations in materials for the industrial product "shoe" during the period of National Socialism. She describes how innovations in natural resource economics within the production process impacted on later processes over the product’s entire life cycle. The paper investigates which players in society were affected and what the related social, economic and scientific consequences were.
