The BMW Museum

The BMW Museum in Munich, which was reopened in 2008, is placed in the category of museums dedicated to brands, companies, transportation and technology. Regardless of this classification, the institution addresses other areas and disciplines as well. The basic concept includes a theme park relating to the present time. Technical topics are explained in a special way and are seen in the overall context of presenting the brand. The visitor experience takes place against the background of a comprehensive scenography and dramaturgy of rooms. The aim of the BMW Museum is to enthrall the visitor and to foster the «accessibility of the premium brand BMW» through the language of the museum. The brand understanding developed by management and marketing appears to be useful in shaping the identity of museums as well as informing about technical developments and milestones.

Wissenschaft – Objekte – Edutainment
Technische Museen seit dem 2. Weltkrieg

Technical Museums since the Second World War

From a post-war perspective, the Second World War had little effect on the concept and content of museums in general and technical museums in particular. The Deutsche Museum in Munich, for example, was visited just as frequently in the early years of war as in the time before 1939. It was only the heavy bombardments from about mid- 1944 that interfered drastically with museum activities.2 Reconstruction, however, was already in planning during the bombardments and measures were taken to return to Munich the artefacts which had been distributed across the country.

Historical Film Technology at the Potsdam Film Museum

The accessible depot of film technology at the Film Museum in Potsdam is a modern means of presenting and informing about the museum’s collection, in which both the interaction of film technology components as well as the archiving and conservation of objects is demonstrated. In guided tours and through the use of selected examples, visitors get a glimpse into analogue devices such as cameras, set equipment and projectors. In addition to storing cultural assets, the accessible depot utilises various technical-historical approaches, e.g. the location and person-related approach as well as the method to understand that film technology and film aesthetics are interdependent and stimulating factors in the history of the medium.

Warum machen Menschen Museen?

A Study of the Amateur Museum as a Cultural Form of Expression

Automobile lovers and mill fans, doll collectors and train enthusiasts, local historians and history buffs of all kinds – they and many others have contributed as professionals or amateurs to the fact that we can currently look upon a colourful and equally rich museum landscape. What makes making museums so attractive that so many people are willing to spend their time and often their money as well on museum activities? If we look at the process of how a museum is made and not at the product of the exhibit itself, we see that museums are very effective symbolic an performative spaces.

Lackner, Helmut: The Technical Museum. Or, how Progress got into the Museum

Jahrhundert.

The Technical Museum
Or, how Progress got into the Museum

In the course of industrialisation, engineers and entrepreneurs have used the institution of the museum to promote their accomplishments and thus also societal progress. Following the Conservatoire brought into being earlier in the context of the French Revolution, this especially pertains to the Science Museum in London, the Deutsche Museum in Munich and the Technical Museum in Vienna. These four establishments, particularly the latter two, were paragons for other museums founded in Europe and the USA in the 20th century. Having been instituted in the long 19th century, they shaped our perception of science and technology greatly in the 20th century.

Amerikanische Technologiemuseen

American Technology Museums
From Machines to Culture

This essay provides an overview of the history and present condition of American museums of technology, and presents some suggestions about future paths. The history is wide-ranging, for the roots of the technology museum extend beyond the usual suspects: the world’s fairs, the Smithsonian, and the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. My review of the last decade or two of museums touches on some of the topics and techniques that have defined the cutting edge of content and interpretation, and outlines the challenges that face many of these museums today. Finally, my overview of future directions suggests that we should build on the whole history of museums, not just the narrow history of the past few decades, as we try to overcome tomorrow’s challenges by making these museums useful participants in ongoing debates about technology, culture, society, and the environment.

Zu profan für den Museumstempel?
Haushaltstechnik in Ausstellungen des 20. Jahrhunderts

Too profane for the museum stamp?
Household Technology in Exhibitions of the 20th Century

Household technology, as an object and theme of exhibits, experienced an eventful history in the 20th century. First, celebrated in the course of electrification as an emblem of labour-saving progress, it became increasingly forgotten as technology advances were made in everyday life. It was not until the energy crises and environmental debates of the seventies and the material turn in cultural studies that domestic “machinery” was again brought to the centre of attention and to the exhibition floor.

Roeckner, Katja: Difficult kinship. Industrial museums and their relationship to technology museums

Katja Roeckner

Schwierige Verwandtschaft

Difficult kinship
Industrial museums and their relationship to technology museums

The model of the «Museum of Industry», created in the 1970s, presented among other a new view of the history of technology, as shown here on the basis of German examples. In doing so, it also presented a challenge for the technical museums established over many decades. Ideal typically, the two types of museums represent social and technological history. A synthesis of the two historical perspectives could very well be useful for an understanding of the changes in society and ways of life during the Industrial Age and thereafter, also with the promise of awakening a great deal of public interest. Until today, however, such a synthesis of museums has yet to be undertaken.

Sichau, Christian: Can science centers also do technology?

Can science centers also do technology?
The possibilities and limits of interactive technology transfer

Traditionally, natural phenomena and human perception are in the foreground of a science center, where the general focus is consequently on the natural sciences, especially on physics. Technology has often only been alluded to in applying the respective phenomenon. As the science centers and technical-scientific museums develop, however, there appears to be a great potential for interactive learning about technology. But this potential can only be exploited when basic differences are given attention.

Sommer, Markus: Hands-on at the Museum of Technology. On the networking of knowledge and experience

Markus Sommer

Hands-on im Technikmuseum

Hands-on at the Museum of Technology
On the networking of knowledge and experience

This article pursues the technical museum’s ambition to transfer knowledge, placing the authentic object – in this case the gyroscopic compass – comprehensibly in the framework of operating principle, technical development, technological and other educible contexts by means of so-called learning objects. Assuming the form of a conceptual study, the article is a plea for positioning the authentic museum object as the core object in a network of knowledge and experience. Hands-on objects, especially those from the area of science centers, are an important part of this approach to learning. The authentic object is central in this network for the visitor’s attention. However, the exclusivity, dedicated to the core object in the museum, as well as the corresponding respect for it, can be all the more understood when the experience and the previous knowledge of the visitor is interactively motivated and recalled through museum and non-museum learning objects.
