Tsar Alexander I in Schaffhausen
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the visit of Tsar Alexander I to Schaffhausen and to Johann Conrad Fischer in January 1814
On Sunday, January 19 2014 the Iron Library organized a New year's Matinée and a subsequent Aperitif with around 140 guests in order to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the visit of the Russian Tsar Alexander I to Schaffhausen and to Johann Conrad Fischer, founder of today's Georg Fischer Ltd. The Tsar was accompanied by his sister Katharina and visited amongst other things the steel foundry in Mühlental.
Dr. Roland Gröbli, secretary general of Georg Fischer Ltd., welcomed the guests. In two pointed speeches Dr. Roland Hofer, keeper of the state archives of Schaffhausen, and Franziska Eggimann, managing director of the Iron Library and keeper of the Corporate Archives of Georg Fischer Ltd., highlighted the historical contexts in Europe and Schaffhausen.
Later, the pianist Valentina Pfister-Modestova and the violinist Iryna Gintova skillfully took the guests onto a musical journey to the Tsar's court with a selection of pieces of music by Russian composers Glinka, Rimski-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. Furthermore, the guests had the rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the brilliants diamond and amethyst encrusted ring, which the tsar gifted Johann Conrad Fischer in 1814.
