Literature on plastics from a landscape of iron
The Forest of Dean in the south-west of England has a history that is shaped by coal, iron, and steel. It was in this area that metallurgists David and Robert Mushet were experimenting on new methods of iron and steel making at the same time as Johann Conrad Fischer.
The Iron Library has now acquired approximately 150 books and brochures on the history of plastics from this “iron area”. This collection was put together over decades by polymer chemist John Morgan. He worked at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory during the 1970s and 1980s helping to develop plastics for application in nuclear physics and astronautics. One example of his work is now extraterrestrial, having been part of an early Venus lander.
The picture shows the symbolic handover of the books at John Morgan’s home in the Forest of Dean (on the left collector John Morgan, in the middle his dog Fido, and on the right Florian Ruhland from the Iron Library).
