History of the Iron Library - An idea initiated by patrons and managers

The Iron Library Foundation was established in December 1948 at the initiative of the management. The driving force was Dr. h.c. Ernst Müller (1885-1957), who was Managing Director back then. In the wake of World War Two, a need to re-examine and create cultural and scientific values was perceived. The management of Georg Fischer regarded it as a duty to preserve the old, widely dispersed literature on its own industrial activity and to collect new works as well. This commitment was seen as the industry's contribution to research and a service to coming generations. By establishing and maintaining the Iron Library, the initiators wanted not only to show their respect and esteem for past scientific and technical achievements but also to preserve yesterday's knowledge as the basis for tomorrow's progress.
