The Iron Library Foundation was established in December 1948 at the initiative of management. The driving force was Dr. h.c. Ernst Müller (1885-1957), who was then Managing Director. In the wake of World War Two, a need was perceived to re-examine and create cultural and scientific values. The management of Georg Fischer regarded it as a duty to preserve the old, widely dispersed literature on its own industrial activity and to collect new works as well. This commitment was seen as the industry's contribution to research and a service to coming generations. By establishing and maintaining the Iron Library, the initiators wanted not only to show their respect and esteem for past scientific and technical achievements but also to preserve yesterday's knowledge as the basis for tomorrow's progress.
