The Iron Library collects historical and modern literature on the subject of iron and related areas. The Library possesses the fundamental European literature on the subject of iron. The coverage offered by this special library is virtually unlimited – the Library contains books on the material iron and the related domains from many countries and in a host of different languages. The Iron Library is constantly acquiring current and historical literature, mainly from the 16th century to the present day and is growing by 400-600 volumes per year.
Visitors can consult works on iron extraction and processing, archaeology, the history of technology and transport, architecture, art history and wrought-iron work, economic and social history, earth sciences, physics, chemistry, mining and mining law, mineralogy and physical metallurgy, and materials testing. The first editions of the major encyclopaedias and lexica of the 18th and 19th centuries are also represented. The Iron Library possesses some 40,000 media on all aspects of the subject of iron. The Periodicals Room contains 650 journals, many of which are complete, going back to 1794. The Library subscribes to the most important current periodicals, which are kept up to date. A broad selection of encyclopaedias, reference works and manuals are available for consultation in the Reading Room.
As a private special library of international importance, the Iron Library is open to interested members of the public as well as to researchers and scientists.
The special collections of the Iron Library contain archives and bequests from the Swiss iron and steel industry, as well as maps, plans, pictures and drawings.
